Healthcare costs are rapidly increasing in both human and veterinary medicine. It is for this reason that we strongly recommend you obtain insurance for your pet while they are young and prior to having health concerns. Regardless of age many pets will benefit from being insured, just be aware some insurers will not cover any pre-existing conditions. We advise clients to read their policies carefully and consider optional riders – some insurers only cover services such as acupuncture, rehabilitation, and physical therapy through these optional riders. Other companies may cover these as part of their base policy. Some insurers have coverage limits per condition, others do not. It is ultimately the client’s responsibility to understand their policy, benefit limits, and reimbursement rules. In our experience insurers do not change their coverage decisions regardless of the opinion of the veterinarian therefore we do not speak with insurance representatives directly.
